GENERAL FAQ's

How do Mighty Armory Precision Reloading Dies differ from others

Will using Mighty Armory's Measured System to reload my ammo improve my accuracy?

Pistol loaders will realize the benefits of SAAMI spec case sizing. Mighty Armory pistol reloading dies are designed around a measured system. Each die should be set to a desired diameter from one to the next in order to achieve best results. Utilizing Mighty Armory's complete set of pistol reloading dies to reload your ammo, you can expect single digit standard deviations, perfect feed off the magazine follower, direct chambering, proper case pressures, clean burning powder, and extreme accuracy.

What are the advantages of a Modular Die design in reloading?

Modular die designs greatest benefit is that each component of the die is machined to mate perfectly with the other components of the die. There's no room for error. Once assembled, your reloading die becomes one. No movement leads to consistent forming of ammunition brass from cycle to cycle. In addition, many of Mighty Armory dies can be used for more than one caliber, with just a simple swap of one component. For instance, our Flare & Expander shafts, pins, tips, bullet barrels, are all interchangeable parts, which will save you space and dollars.

What factors provide the best ammunition accuracy when reloading?

Choosing a sizing die that sizes full length to SAAMI specifications will provide you with better than factory rounds. From there, always follow powder company load data for the best accuracy from your rounds.

Is concentricity an important factor when selecting my reloading dies?

Yes, the closer the point of your bullet is to "zero" when facing the bore, the less chance of bullet deformation as it makes its way into the bore.

Is case lube recommended when using Mighty Armory reloading dies?

For TNT Gold Match Pistol & Gold Match Rifle Dies, we recommend case lube (either PEG75/alcohol or imperial wax, depending on your reloading press). We do NOT recommend aerosol lubes.

- When reloading on Autoprogressive (indexing) presses, we recommend a mix of 1oz PEG75 + 6oz 91% alcohol. Spray the cases, wait 20 minutes for alcohol to evaporate before sizing. Do not lube the cases and let set for more than a day as the lube will dry out and render useless.

- When reloading on single stage or turret presses, we recommend imperial wax.

What makes Mighty Armory's Reloading Dies superior for precision reloading?

Mighty Armory dies are well known for their superior quality and performance in precision reloading. The reloading dies were designed to be tool-free, modular and ultra tough lasting millions of cycles on your press. Precision manufacturing, use of high-quality materials, and attention to detail ensure that reloaders can achieve consistent and accurate ammunition. By using Mighty Armory reloading dies, precision shooters can have confidence in the reliability and precision of their reloads.

How do I ensure that my rounds will chamber properly after reloading?

Always case guage your ammo after reloading. If you find some will not case guage, you can recrimp and check again and/or be sure your case guage is to spec. It is always best to lock the slide rearward and drop each round into the chamber of the pistol barrel chamber, so there are no surprises when it really matters. This is called chamber checking.

What should I consider when choosing my rifle reloading dies?

When choosing a rifle reloading die, consider a full length resizing die bore, desired case neck tension around your bullet, proper flare expansion if needed for bullet seating, consistent seating for required COL, and proper crimp when necessary. Load data is offered by all major powder manufacturers. Consult the manual for load development.

Full length resizing is recommended for all rifle cases. Neck sizing can lead to overexpanded cases and reduce reloading times as it weakens the brass. A hard, smooth sizing surface that is consistent in sizing, especially headspacing, is of the utmost importance.

What should I consider when choosing my pistol reloading dies?

Full length pistol resizing dies are the only way to achieve SAAMI spec ammo. To complete a SAAMI spec round, Mighty Armory’s pistol reloading dies are the only consumer-available dies that will achieve this for you.

DECAPPING DIE FAQ's

Questions relating to Mighty Armory Decapping Dies

How do I know which Mighty Armory decapping die I should choose for my reloading bench?

When selecting your decapping die, ensure the universal decapping die bore length and diameter are tall and wide enough for the case you will be decapping.

For instance, the Mighty Armory Magnum or PUA die will decap up to a .338 Lapua caliber case size. Popular caliber sizes we decap with the Magnum & PUA Decapping Dies include .308 Win, .30-06, 9mm Luber, .40 cal, .45 ACP, .44 magnum, .380 ACP.

If you are loading on a single stage or turret press, the Magnum Die or PUA Die would be your best choice. It offers a primer flicker spring to prevent primer pull back and jams down your shoot.

If you are loading on an autoindexing press, the XMS, XMA or Super Duty Dies are an excellent choice. These dies offer primer flicker spring and a gravity case guide with an optional compression spring for the guide.

If loading on an autodriven, autoprogressive, we recommend the XMS Die. If you're looking for a smart decapping die, select the Super Duty Decapping Die paired with our auto-drive shut-down sensors. The Super Duty is a 100% spring operated design.

If loading .338 Lapua up to BMG 50, the Big Boy Decapping Die has you covered. Three pin sizes are available (.058, .078 and .110). Know the size of your flash hole before you make your selection.

Lastly, if you’re loading 17-20 cal, then the Shorty Bull is the decapping die you should choose.

How do I decap cases with small flash holes?

Some of the European brass, ie, Lapua, as well as US-made Peterson and alpha brass have small flash holes spec’d at 0.060. The Mighty Armory M2 steel .058 pin is the choice to make when decapping this brass. The Mighty Armory PUA Decapping Die is highly recommended.

Does Mighty Armory use a spring-loaded primer flicker? How does it work? What are the benefits?

The Mighty Armory decapping die has been designed to be tool-free. Simply install your pin on the shaft (with vibratite 111). Dropt the shaft into the die body. Set the sprig into the threaded well above the shaft, then screw on the posted cap backing it out 1/4 turn. As you decap and the pin hits the primer, the pin and shaft will rise approximately 0.010 before it reaches a stop point. Once the primer is punched out, the spring will rebound, which pressures the shaft back down. This results in the action required to flick the primer off the tip of the pin and send it through the shoot at high speed. This will prevent primer pull-back and will also prevent primers from clogging in your press shoot. Listen for the snap!

What is the difference between the Magnum & PUA Decapping Dies?

The Magnum, & PUA Decapping dies are both Universal and are spring operated by using a primer flicker cap design. The difference between the two is in the pin sizes. The Magnum includes two .078 diameter M2 steel pins, while the PUA includes two .058 diameter M2 steel pins. Mighty Armory's M2 steel pins are available separately and can be swapped among all of the decapping dies.

What is the difference between the two versions of the Shorty Bull Decapping Die?

One version has a one-piece decapping shaft-pin and fully threaded cap specifically for decapping 17 caliber to 20 caliber cases.

The other version has a primer flicker cap and spring with the standard shaft for decapping up to .308 cases.

Both die bodies are exactly the same. The difference is the shaft and primer flicker cap mechanism.

What Decapping Die will decap 17 caliber up to .308?

The Shorty Bull Decapping Die is perfect for the caliber range needed.

Purchase the primer flicker version Mighty Armory Shorty Bull Decapping Die Primer Flicker Spring and include in your purchase the Shorty Bull One-piece Shaft for decapping 17-20 cal.

SIZING DIE FAQ's

Questions about pistol and rifle sizing dies

Do I need to clean my Mighty Armory dies before or after using?

Mighty Armory recommends cleaning your dies with 99% alcohol on a snug fit bore mop and wiped dry after each use. Leaving lube behind will cause hardening, which can increase your potential of either sticking a case or holding onto brass filings, which can cause scratches on your brass.

If I buy a sizing die, is there a need for a flare expander die?

Flare if you’re using a bullet dropper on an AP press. No need to flare if you’re hand setting rifle. Providing you’re setting boat tails. Flat backs require flare and crimp.

How do I set up a full-length sizing die correctly?

Typically, a Mighty Armory Full Length Sizing die is set .003 below SAAMI spec. This allows for .001 to .002 spring back, which leaves .001 clearance between the angle on the case and in the chamber. However, in today’s world, most mass produced rifle barrel chambers can vary in length, which we refer to as headspacing. While the sized diameters remain the same as the Full Length die, our new Full Length Head Space die can be set to a maximum shoulder set back (bump) of .001 to -.006. Adjusting the die is as simple as turning it up or down little by little to determine the headspacing that best fits your chamber. Problem Solved.

How will the quality of a sizing die affect my reloading?

Investing in precision-made tool steel reloading dies hardened to at least 60 Rockwell with a polished bore will ensure consistent performance and longevity. Mighty Armory reloading dies are precision machined, made one-by-one and go through a rigorous quality control protocol. Mighty Armory is made in the USA and not mass produced!

What is the difference between full length sizing and neck sizing?

Full length sizing sizes the diameter of the neck, the angle on the case, the shoulder diameter on the case, the walls on the case all the way down to the head. Neck sizing will only size the neck for desired bullet tension. Continued neck sizing will cause your case to expand and heat up to a point where it will become brittle and thin in some areas which will lead to accuracy deficiencies. The main body of the case is chamber-sized. We do not recommend neck sizing. We highly recommend Full Length sizing.

Are there any tips for avoiding common mistakes with sizing dies?

Forgetting to use lube on full length tool steel dies will cause cases to get stuck in the die.

FLARE EXPANDER DIE FAQ's

Questions about Mighty Armory Flare Expander Dies

How much bell should I put in the case when reloading for pistol?

After flaring, measure the inside of the case just below the flare. Ideally you want to see .003 to .004 below bullet diameter. This ensures correct bullet tension and proper crimping tensions.

What should I do if the expander die is shaving the bullet?

This is a very simple fix. You will have to increase the flare diameter to prevent this. You can increase the case flare by turning it down.

How do I choose the right expander die for my needs with so many options on the market?

There are several types of expander dies on the market today, each with different pros/cons as well as different capabilities. It is recommended that you use a set of dies that are matched. For instance, MA dies are a measured system, which makes loading easy and efficient – Think SAAMI spec for the best results!

Why is my expander die not putting enough flare on the case mouth?

Turn the flare down deeper into the case to widen the flare. Check the ID of the case after doing so. For pistol cases, ideally you want -.003 to -.004 tension when seating your bullet.

BULLET SEATING DIE FAQ's

Questions about Bullet Seating Dies

Why do I need a bullet seating die for each cartridge that I shoot?

Specific bullet seating die barrels typically result in more consistent in-spec COLs. It is always best to use a specific bullet seating die for the caliber which you are loading to achieve superior results. Universal bullet seaters generally lead to inconsistent COLs.

How does a bullet seating die affect cartridge neck and bullet runout?

Most of the pistol bullet seating dies on the market are a simple stem screwed into the die body with a radius tip that pushes the bullet down into the sized and flared case. For absolute concentricity and consistent COLs we recommend Mighty Armory bullet barrels, which are designed specific to each caliber. This ensures COL within tolerance. In addition, the bullet will set perfectly vertical in your case when preparing for crimp. For rifle, you want a seating stem that has been machined for the specific bullet you are loading for long range shooting. For plinking rounds, it isn’t as critical.

What features should I look for in a high quality seating die?

The closer your bullet tip is to the center of the rifle bore, the less likely it is to scar the bullet when entering the bore, which will maintain bullet coefficient. A scarred bullet will wander.

Performance will justify the cost as you will realize more consistent COLs, vertical alignment as the bullet seats into the case, and more consistent neck tension. The Mighty Armory Bullet Seating die folds back the flare approx. 80% depending on the bullet.

The performance of a specific caliber bullet seating barrel will ensure the bullet is seating into the case perfectly straight, which reduces seating pressure.

Why is it better to seat and crimp in separate steps?

Seating and crimping separately will guarantee consistency in the COL of your rounds and proper bullet tension.

TAPER CRIMP DIE FAQ's

Taper crimp dies play a crucial role in achieving consistent ammunition quality by ensuring proper neck tension and reliable bullet retention. By applying a uniform crimp, these dies prevent bullet movement and contribute to consistent performance and reliability in reloaded ammunition.

What is the purpose of a taper crimp die?

The crimp die, which Mighty Armory also refers to as a "finishing die" is responsible for folding back the flare of the case into the bullet creating proper bullet tension and case sizing to SAAMI spec.

Can I use a taper crimp die for both semi-auto pistols and revolver rounds?

Taper crimp is much more forgiving than roll crimp and doesn’t overwork the brass. Taper crimp is so versatile it can work on both.

How do I know if I've over-crimped?

An over-crimped lead or plated bullet tells you it is unhappy by hurling patterns, not groups. This is a result of squashing the bullet. For bullets under 14 Burnell hardness, we recommend a crimp .001 over the typical crimp so the bullet does not get squashed yet there is enough tension to hold it properly.

What's the difference between roll crimp and taper crimp?

Roll crimp: Where the mouth of the case is physically rolled into the bullet’s cannelure. A roll crimp tends to overwork the brass and is typically considered to be an outdated technique.

Taper crimp: Where the case mouth is left alone and the sidewalls are squeezed against the bullet to keep things in place. When used with a Mighty Armory die set, the taper crimp finishes the round to SAAMI specifications.

How do I measure the crimp on a loaded round?

Use your caliper to measure the diameter of a loaded round right at the case mouth where it mates with the bullet.

SWAGING FAQ's

Swaging is method that utilizes a tool shaped for re-forming primer pocket entries. Primer pocket swaging is always required on a crimped primer pocket, but not necessary, at times, on non-crimped primer pockets.

What press is utilized for swaging?

Swaging is generally performed on auto-indexing presses or on single stage or turret presses. Mighty Armory swaging sets includes a hold down die, a universal case carrying cup and a large or small swage nipple that are forced into the pocket and reform the primer pocket entry for effortless priming.

What is the difference between a Mighty Armory Swage Kit vs a Swage Set

The Swage Set includes a Mighty Armory Universal Decapping Die, along with the universal cup, swage nipple, shaft and tip. The kit does not include the decapping die.
